and Career Fair 2011

On the 24th of August The Ministry of Public Administration (Scholarships and Advanced Training Division) hosted The Returning National Scholar Symposium and Career Fair 2011, which was expected to attract a little over five hundred returning scholars. Acuitas was pleased to be a part of this event, which was held at The National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in the nation’s capital, Port of Spain.

Acuitas attracted a great deal of curiosity and interest from many of the returning scholars, who visited the corporate booth which we had set up. It displayed our services and track-record through an inviting slideshow, informative brochures and attractive signage. The new graduates were warmly welcomed by our booth attendants who responded to visitor questions about the history, profile, projects and potential job opportunities within Acuitas. Though our main services include project management, facilities management, loss adjusting, and property development, the graduates learnt that we accept a diversity of resumes, very much in keeping with the diversity of our team and our broad skill-sets.

This year, as we celebrate our 8th anniversary, we feel a deep sense of pride in our many achievements, the sum of which belie our relative ‘youth.’ We look forward to the promise of the future, and also look forward to working with people of promise – the core driver of our team diversity. We take this opportunity to wish our national scholarship recipients the very best and to invite interest from all individuals gifted with talent, skill and a spirit of innovation who wish to be a part of who we are and what we do – project management with creativity, class and clear, cutting-edge professionalism.

Celebrating World FM Day 2010

world fm day.jpg

June 24th was a special day for Facilities Management Associations and Consultants around the world, as it marked World FM Day 2010. This being its 2nd. Annual celebration, Acuitas Caribbean Limited – (a local Project Management Company) – in association with other Facilities Management Professionals from Brazil to Australia, marked FM celebrations with strategic initiatives ranging from Community Projects to official dinners and sporting events. These activities were all designed to raise public awareness about this specialized field.

So what exactly is FM and why should we know about it? According to IFMA (the International Facilities Management Association), Facilities Management is a profession that encompasses multiple disciplines, to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology. FM is about implementing cost-effective, technology-effective, sustainable strategies in order to optimize the quality and longevity of buildings or built spaces and reduce their impact on the environment; all towards improving the working, studying or residential experience of the people who use them. The bottom line is Facilities Management promises a better quality of human life by producing better quality buildings, and better working and living environments.

That is exactly what students at The Cascade School for the Deaf learnt from their corporate neighbours, when they paid a special visit to the school on Thursday 24th June - World FM Day. The Acuitas FM team, along with Acuitas Director- Geoffrey Abdulah, and world-renowned Facilities Engineering Associates (FEA) Consultant and IFMA Fellow- Chris Hodges (out of Virginia, USA) spent some quality time with the children; educating them about FM in recognition of World FM Day. There was a high degree of interaction and a strong sense of connection between both guests and hosts, as students learnt about the importance of greenery, the careful selection of lighting, and even the need to recycle paper (among other highlighted issues).

Ms. Giselle Holder started off the presentation by explaining what World FM Day and FM are all about, breaking down what can be a very complex and sophisticated profession into easily understandable terms. Chris Hodges then explained the close relationship between building management and environmental-consciousness. He also made a connection between the comfort and safety of facilities having a direct effect on the performance of its occupants. In this case, an ideally run educational facility may have a direct effect on increasing academic performance. During his discussion, both sides shared a moment of hearty amusement when the students cheekily, through their teacher, asked why Mr. Hodges had not brought Obama with him.

As one small step in making a difference, Acuitas ended their presentation with an invitation to the students and the school as a whole, to join with them in their paper-recycling initiative. This was readily and excitedly accepted, with the students expressing a high degree of curiosity about the recycling process and also about Acuitas. The FM presentation was evidently mutually enjoyable and educational.

Notably, Acuitas featured as one of the gold sponsors of the recently convened Second Annual Facilities Management and Maintenance Conference, hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce which took place at the Trinidad Hyatt on the 22nd and 23rd of June. Acuitas is a Project Management Company offering a diverse portfolio of services including Project and Construction Management, Facilities Management Consultancy and 24-hour Service provision, as well as Loss Adjusting Services.
